Goodbye!

May 11, 2012

The way City Year says goodbye to their schools and students ranges from grand celebrations to small gifts.  Each team and corps member says goodbye in their own way.

The ReNew Accelerated Team is throwing a final Cinco da Mayo themed party at their school.  They have donations lined up from Mexican restaurants and are working on securing a piñata.

The entire Sarah T. Reed High School team said goodbye to the students during a special assembly.  After the assembly, students were treated to chicken, grits, biscuits and eggs.   Two corps members brought video games to play with their students.

Ellen Huffman of the Sarah T. Reed Elementary team made a literature magazine feature students’ fiction, poems, and drawings.  It came out two days ago.

Some corps members are saying goodbye in more personal ways.  Corps member Tiffany Montano made mix CDs for her favorite students.  One of her students loves making beats, so his mix cd will be filled with new music that he can sample from.

Another more artistically inclined corps member is drawing each student a picture of an animal and writing a note on the back.  Last year, I took portraits of students and gave them to them as good bye gifts.

However, we must also say good bye to you readers.  This post will be the last one on the blog for a while. As we all graduate next week on May 18th, there will be a break before the blog starts up again sometime in July.  On behalf of all the corps members here at City Year New Orleans, we invite you to our graduation, and we thank you for keeping up with the blog all year.  I hope you’ve enjoyed reading about our experiences as much as we’ve enjoyed sharing them.

Thank you all so much for your service this year, and sharing it with us all through the blog posts. Best of luck with your LACY plans.

Laura stayed up all night to make those notebooks for her students. Very dedicated!
