Green Team Spotlight

October 22, 2012

By Fidgi Simeon, Corps Member Proudly Serving on the Entergy Team at Samuel J. Green Charter School

Since August and September, the Green Team has adapted to the culture of Samuel J. Green Charter School, has built some wonderful relationships with our students, and worked hand in hand with our teachers to provide the best education possible for our students. Our team is in the swing of service, and doing our best to make a difference in the lives of our students every day.  Not only have we connected with the students, but we have gotten to know our school personnel as well.

City Year and the staff at Samuel J. Green Charter School recently had a chance to break bread and celebrate the imminent closing of the first trimester. Teachers, administrators, staff, and corps members walked down the street from our school to Dat Dog, and enjoyed delicious New Orleans style hot dogs together.  From genuine “gator dogs” to crawfish etouffee toppings, it was a unique experience!

After a stressful week of testing, teachers took the time to monitor and assess their students’ progress, and receive feedback from the school director on ways to improve their learning in the classroom.

Meanwhile, my team played a role in working alongside teachers to strategize better ways to improve the learning environment for the scholars. One highlight comes from team member Morgan Podraza, a corps member who works in the 7th grade.  Morgan has worked diligently at Green to build City Year Culture.  She began a literacy billboard that showcased the books that corps members are reading this month. Creating a literacy culture is one of the many goals that Entergy Team has for the Green scholars.  We are excited about executing all of our ideas, and engaging the whole school.
